4 December 2023 – The South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan has sent his condolences to the Craig family following the sudden death of veteran journalist Jermaine Craig today (4 December 2023).
Craig collapsed while at the gym and was rushed to Sandton Medi Clinic where efforts to revive him failed. The former head of communications at the 2010 FIFA World Cup is survived by his wife Michelle, and children Matthew and Christian.
Dr Jordaan said he learnt of Jermaine’s death with great shock and sadness.
‘’This is a sad day for me and most of South Africans, especially those in the journalism and the communications fraternity where Jermaine worked for different entities.
‘’He was my head of media and communications during the 2010 FIFA World Cup where I was the CEO, and his expertise was treasured globally. He was a calm and diligent individual who was thorough at whatever he did. I am shocked, saddened and at a loss for words,’’ said Dr Jordaan.
Craig worked for the Star sports department for many years before joining the 2010 FIFA World Cup local organising committee as the head of media and communications.
He was also Editor of The Argus and later GM of sport for the Independent Newspapers Group. At the time of his death, he had formed his own communications company, Craig Communications and was a consultant for a number of organisations including Kaizer Chiefs, LaLiga, NBA Africa, 4Racing among others.
According to a statement by his family, information regarding funeral and other arrangements will follow in due course.
