21 August 2023 – Women’s international football has dominated the headlines in the last two months, with the main stage being the recently-ended 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand that brought excitement, shock results, achievements, entertainment and a new Champion in Spain.
The domestic football attention now swings back to South African shores this week as the Hollywoodbets Super League resumes this week.
Mid–week action will see a battle of the students as the University of Pretoria host Tshwane University of Technology on Wednesday 23 August 2023. This match will be live on the Hollywoodbets Super League Facebook page at 3pm.
An action-packed weekend of women’s football will follow, with five matches scheduled for the weekend.
In another match, the University of Johannesburg will be looking for revenge when they meet the University of the Western Cape, who dethroned them in the 2023 Varsity Cup final last week. The two institutions face off in the opening fixture of week 20 in the Hollywoodbets Super League.
This match will be played at the UJ Stadium, Soweto Campus and broadcast live on SABC 1 on Saturday 26 August 2023. Kickoff is at 15h00.
MaIndies welcome JVW Ladies to the Giyani Stadium on Saturday afternoon, while Copperbelts Ladies entertain Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Royal AM travel to Mpumalanga to take on TS Galaxy in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
Women’s football has surely gained a lot of recognition and respect since the FIFA Women’s World Cup and this was evident even with the increase in viewership.
