17 May 2020 – The effects of the novel coronavirus continue to sweep across the African continent with leagues being cancelled.
DR Congo is the latest African country to cancel its football season before completion as chances of concluding remain uncertain. The Executive Committee of the DR Congo Football Association met this week (Wednesday,13 May 2020) in Kinshasa and made the painstaking decision to end its competitions.
The decision has also resulted in giants TP Mazembe named champions.
Up until when the season was halted to wait for the pandemic to die down, Mazembe led the standings with 53 points, five ahead of arch rivals AS Vita. The two will represent DR Congo in the Total CAF Champions League, 2020-21 season.
Meanwhile, JSK of Kinshasa (West) and Etoile Jaune of Katanga (Center South) have been promoted to the first division while OC Bukavu Dawa from Bukavu and AS Nyuki from Butembo have been relegated. At the same time, there will be no promotion or relegation from the East Zone as they had played few matches.
