2 March 2020 – Champions-elect Mamelodi Sundows Ladies are just one match away from setting a new record in the SAFA National Women’s League of going through the entire season without a loss.
The log leaders extended their unbeaten run to 21 matches this past weekend when they had to hold on against a stubborn University of Johannesburg at the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton, winning 3-2 after taking a 3-0 lead.
Sundowns is now sitting on a record 63 points from 21 wins – the only team in the league to enjoy this run.
The Chloorkop side will face neighbours Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in the final match of the season – to be played on Sunday, 29 March.
Even though Sundowns has already won the inaugural SNWL, they share some similarities with TUT, which makes this match all to play for:
- Both have scored 82 goals
- Their top goal scorers Rhoda Muladzi (Sundowns) and Hilda Magaia (TUT) are level – 36 goals
TUT, however, is only on 54 points after 21 outings.
Sundowns Ladies were crowned champions two matches ago – when they defeated First Touch Academy of Limpopo 11-1.
In other results, University of Western Cape travelled to the North West and defeated Golden Ladies 4-1 at the Montshiwa Stadium – a result which saw them move two spots up to sixth place.
TUT brushed aside Thunderbirds 2-1 at the Jan Smuts Stadium, while Coal City Wizards and First Touch Academy cancelled each other out with a 2-2 draw at the Seshego Stadium.
The clash between Richmond Ladies and Tsunami Queens was not played – investigations are undeway as to what led to that.
