1 November 2017 – The season-long tug of war for the Sasol League title in the Western Cape shows no signs of abating after the weekend’s results.
The big clash of the weekend pitted defending champions UWC Ladies against their rivals and nearest challengers for the title, Cape Town Roses on Saturday afternoon.
Having taken the lead early in the first half, UWC were confident of securing this vital victory and all but progress to the Sasol League National Championship in December. However, two goals from Cape Town Roses in the second half saw them not only collect maximum points, but also leapfrog UWC Ladies on the log and hold a one-point lead going into the final round of matches this weekend.
Cape Town Roses will need to match UWC Ladies’ results this weekend and a place at the National Championship, which they won in 2014, will be secured.
Vasco da Gama are all but certain of finishing in third place after gaining a point away to Burnley United on Saturday following a goalless draw.
Struggling side Southern Stars managed to secure a morale-boosting 3-2 win when they hosted midtable side Maties FC, while Spurs Ladies put a whopping 18 goals past a hapless Milano Ladies United at Rooikraans on Saturday afternoon.
Other results in the league saw RV Ladies defeat Santos Ladies 4-3, while Manenberg Ladies and Portia United play out an 11-goal thriller with the latter side emerging 6-5 winners.
Notably, Sasol recently renewed their sponsorship of the country’s premier women’s football league, an initiative that has played an integral part in contributing to the growth and development of women’s football in South Africa for another four (4) years until 2021.
The Sasol League takes place across all the nine provinces of South Africa. Matches are played on Saturdays and Sundays in the afternoon and will culminate with the National Championships that take place over a period of one week towards the end of the year.
