20 October 2023 – The South African Football Association (SAFA) is saddened by the passing of former Bafana Bafana assistant coach Phil “Mr Jones” Setshedi.
His passing was confirmed by his former club Orlando Pirates, where he first served as a no-nonsense defender and later as team manager.
A colourful character who was often lauded for his flamboyant fashion sense, Setshedi was on the bench serving as assistant to the late Clive Barker when the South African senior men’s team won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996.
Born in Dube, Soweto, his passing comes just months after the legendary Barker passed away in June 2023.
