11 October 2023- Basetsana played to a 2 all draw against Burundi in their second leg of FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers at Lucas Moripe stadium.The draw means that Burundi go through to the next round on the away goals rule.
The two sides played to a goalless draw on Saturday in Burundi’s ‘home’ game played at the same venue. As was the case in the first leg, South Africa dominated the proceedings in the second leg but had to come from behind twice as the two teams settled for a 2-2 draw.
Burundi’s Akimamna opened the scoring in the 12th minute but Mibe equalized for South Africa in the 32nd minute to keep the home team’s chances bright. She was, however, substituted due to injury soon after her goal.
Burundi took the lead again in the 67th minutes from a well-worked out goal by Nshimirimana, while Mabuza got the South Africans back into the game with another beauty in the 72nd minute.
This result sees the South African U20 Women’s National Team bow out of the 2023 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and remain the only national team yet to qualify for a World Cup.
