24 August 2023 – The South African women’s under-20 team will be going into a training camp in the south of Johannesburg in preparation for the start of the qualification process for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Coach Maud Khumalo’s 44-member team assembles at the SAFA National Technical Centre (Fun Valley) on Thursday afternoon 24 August 2023 and she will run the rule over the group of players until 29 August 2023.
“This training camp will be conducted with an eye on the World Cup qualifiers. It will assist us with looking at new players that have been there within the system before, and also new personnel. This is to help us find the best players that can represent the country very well,” she said.
Khumalo had to find space on a busy calendar to accommodate her plans as besides the recently-ended FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, there were several other things to consider.
“It was not going to be easy to prepare because everything is happening almost at the same time. The main focus was Banyana Banyana at the World Cup. We also knew that the Under-17s and the Under-20s would start their qualifiers at the same time. I think what we need to do is to use the time we have to our best of our abilities in terms of making sure that we have friendlies, at least three.
“This will help us see if the team is gelling very well. Yes, there is something planned because the whole idea is that we can’t just go play qualifiers without playing any friendly matches. So I think friendly games will help us a lot because the time is limited (before the qualifiers). The most important thing is to have the players playing friendlies so that we can see how they play together. It will be then easier for us as coaches to see our shortcomings and if there are players that need to be a part of the team that we didn’t select, it will help us going forward.” The South Africans face Burundi in their first qualifying match in October 2023
