27 February 2020 – In the ABSA Premiership, Mamelodi Sundowns trail log leaders Kaizer Chiefs by four points after both played 20 games each.
Sundowns has won 12 matches, drew five and lost three and sit on 41 points.
For their female counterparts in the inaugural SAFA National Women’s League, it is a completely different picture.
Sundowns Ladies were crowned champions with three games to spare – clinching the title with 53 points in their 11-1 demolition of Limpopo’s First Touch Academy (16 February 2020).
Last weekend they put the celebrations on hold as they continued with their business-like approach to the game, showing no mercy to Coal City Wizards with a 4-1 win.
Now two matches remain before the league goes into recess.
The first clash will be against the University of Johannesburg, which has been blowing hot and cold.
This will be take place on Sunday, 1 March 2020 at Sinaba Stadium.
Kickoff is at 15h00.
Sundowns will then take a long break before playing their final match of the season where they will be handed the trophy and medals.
This will be in the much-anticipated fixture against bitter rivals, second-placed TUT on Sunday, 29 March at the Lucas Moripe Stadium – the scene where the Sundowns Men’s team play most of their home matches.
Kickoff will also be at 15h00.
Before the league champions play the two remaining matches, it is important to note that they have never put a foot wrong in their entire inaugural season – the Chloorkp-based outfit has registered 20 wins from the same number of matches, giving them a haul of 60 points.
And at the rate there are going, they will finish the season unbeaten – setting a record that might take time to break.
In other matches this weekend, First Touch Academy hosts Coal City Wizards at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane; Univesity of Western Cape travels to the North West for a date with Golden Ladies at the Motshiwa Stadium; Richmond Ladies lock horns with Tsunami Queens at Umziwabantu Stadium and TUT is at Jan Smuts Stadium to battle it out with Thunderbirds Ladies. All the games are on Saturday, 29 February and will kick off at 15h00.
Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies and Durban Ladies will not be in action this weekend – their match will take place on Sunday, 8 March at Siwelele Park Stadium.
