5 December 2019 – The Year 2019 was when the successful first phase of Vision 2022 was concluded and analysing it, was a huge success with the u23 national team capping it with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualification.
It was a year in which Bafana Bafana reached the quarter-finals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, beating hosts Egypt 1-0, drawing rare reviews from renowned coach Jose Mourinho.
Banyana Banyana were finalists in the AWCON tournament, losing in the final to Nigeria in the penalty shootout. The AWCON exploits meant that Banyana Banyana, Nigeria and Cameroon qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France as African representatives.
The Year also saw Banyana Banyana making history by winning the COSAFA Cup for the third time in a row, a feat no other country has managed.
The u20 qualified for the FIFA World Cup in Poland, having won bronze in the final CAF tournament and also won the COSAFA Cup tournament in Zambia where they were the defending champions.
On the women side, the u17 girls won silver at the COSAFA tournament while the u20 won bronze in Port Elizabeth.
The year ended on a high when the u23 won bronze at the CAF 8-Nations tournament thereby joining hosts Egypt and Ivory Coast as Africa’s representatives at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
