24 January 2019 —South Africa’s National Under-20 (Amajita) squad arrived safely in Niamey, Niger’s capital on Thursday afternoon leading up to this year’s CAF Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations tournament.
This eight-nation continental tournament is set to run from 2 – 17 February 2019 in the city of Niamey and Maradi.
Top four finishers of this biennial continental showpiece will automatically qualify for this year’s upcoming FIFA Under-20 World Cup set to take place in Poland from 23 May to 15 June.
The national juniors left South Africa on Wednesday evening (23 January, 23h00) for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; where they caught a connecting flight for Niamey, Niger at 10h30.
Amajita are in Group A, and will battle it out against hosts Niger, Burundi and Nigeria.
Amajita have been in camp since 14 January where Amajita coach Thabo Senong worked with a group of 28 players in search of a 21-man squad that is to represent the nation on this continental stage.
The coach expressed that it was not an easy process to go through given the amount of
talent he had to work and choose from to make the final squad. However, added that he had full confidence in his final 21 players he had selected.
