14 February 2018 – The province of Gauteng was buzzing this past Saturday as ABC League action more than lived up to expectations and delivered some scintillating entertainment.
African All Stars FC (Amazozo) stormed to an impressive 0-1 away win against Dube Continental FC at the Nike Centre. The victory moved All Stars into the top four while Dube languishes in the bottom half of the table.
The action then moved to the Alexandra Stadium where Baberwa FC took advantage of home conditions to thump Alexandra Black Aces FC 4-1. The win allowed Baberwa to keep pace with the top six and improve their goal difference.
Nicknamed the Royals, Baberwa FC Coach Jabulani Mendu stated, “I am happy because of the attitude of the players. We had a rough patch but the boys showed character and from now on you will be seeing a different Baberwa and we will be scoring more goals”.
Aces however now have a -13 difference and will need to defend better in their next encounter as they were badly exposed at the back.
Pretoria Callies suffered an embarrassing home loss to M Tigers FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium as they tamely went down 0-4. It was a much-needed win for Tigers as they look to push for a top-eight finish.
In yet another success story for away teams, Vaal Professionals beat Ga-Rankuwa United 0-1 at the Giant Stadium in an edgy contest. The loss left United rooted to the foot of the table with a measly 7 points and -27 goal difference. Their next game against M Tigers is a must-win encounter to have any chance of survival.
Maccabi FC then continued their great run of form with a 2-1 win over rival club Tembisa Sports Centre at Belfour Park. The win helped maintain their 5 point lead at the top while Tembisa remain stuck in the bottom three.
The day’s action concluded in Springs as JDR Stars beat Valencia FC (1-0) in their own den to keep at least some sort of pressure on Maccabi as they snatched second spot from Alexandra United.
Things look mighty tight at the top as at least nine teams are still in contention to catch Maccabi. The action picks up this coming Friday. Be sure to look out for previews and updates right here on www.safa.net.
