3 April 2023 – Following the Motsepe Foundation’s R150 million donation for the development and growth of sport at primary and secondary schools last month, a further meeting was held on Monday (3 April 2023) to focus on implementation for School Sports.

The Motsepe Foundation was present in the meeting also attended by Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan and Steve Pila from Schools Committee.

The parties agreed that School Sport should be a high priority and Wednesdays should be used to play.

Dr Jordaan said he was happy with the resolutions that were concluded at the gathering.

“We are happy with the outcome of the meeting and look forward to School Sport as a major contributor of the  delivery of quality players in the future,” Dr Jordaan said.

“Historically, School Sport has contributed to the production of many players over the years who went on to become household names in South Africa.”

School Sport and SAFA have already delivered silverware after South Africa completed the double at the CAF African Schools Championship in Malawi, winning both the boys and girls titles in Malawi in October last year.

The double triumph in the COSAFA Qualifier also ensured qualification to the continental finals.

Clapham High School beat Malawi side Salima Secondary School in the boys’ competition while Edendale Technical High School triumphed in the girls’ competition after amassing 12 points in the round-robin competition to finish at the summit.

The two South African teams will participate in the CAF African Schools Football Championship Continental Final in Durban from April 5-8 where the best teams from the six Confederation of African Football zones will battle it out to be crowned overall champions.
