Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos believes that this week’s friendly internationals against neighbours Mozambique and Angola at Mbombela Stadium will be played with the intensity of official competitive matches.
Broos’ charges face the Mozambicans at Mbombela Stadium, in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, on Thursday 17 November (kick off is at 20h30) and then tackle the Angolans three days later at the same venue on Sunday 20 November 2022 (15h00).
“There is nothing friendly about these friendlies,” Broos said ahead of the first match against Mozambique.
“Mozambique is a strong team and we will play to win. We know what we need to do and we have a big (Africa Cup of Nations) qualifier (against Liberia) in March, so this is the time to prepare,” said the Belgian.
The days leading up to this week’s games have been great preparation for the team with Broos applauding the facilities at Ingwenyama Resort for having all that is needed to have a good camp within arm’s reach. “It is wonderful to have these facilities and to have such a high level camp.”
While he was without three players due to injuries, there is excitement and commitment shown by the members of the squad who received late call-ups. “Every player deserves to be here and it is up to them what they do on the pitch for these friendlies, and going for matches in the future,” said Broos.
Asked what drives him when taking into account the many challenges he has had to deal with since assuming the seat, the Belgian replied, “Ambition, that is what drives me. It’s not about picking up a pay cheque at the end of the month, it is about building something for the future.
“I know we will qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in March, and that drives me and my team. We are working hard towards it and I wish the critics see it.”
