7 October 2022 – The South African Football Association (SAFA) is deeply saddened by the passing of sporting activist Cheryl Roberts.

Roberts passed away on Friday at the age of 60 and SAFA President Danny Jordaan extended his heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and sporting fraternity.

“This is such a massive loss,” Dr Jordaan said. “She made a huge contribution. It is a huge loss for sport, as well as women leadership in sport.

“One of the things she celebrated was the victory of Banyana Banyana during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July.”

Dr Jordaan said Roberts fought for non racial sport and represented South Africa at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona in table tennis.

“Cheryl was active in SACOS. Our sincerest condolences to the  family, our struggle stalwart for non racialism and equality in sport.

“Her fierce and uncompromising stand for the rights of women in sport was a lifelong commitment. Sport has lost an important voice  and she will be sadly missed.”
