12 July 2022 – Kegan Johannes says they have ticked every box during the preparations for their opening COSAFA Cup quarter-final clash against Mozambique, adding the Bafana Bafana squad is now raring to go.
Johannes, who has been named captain of this current Bafana Bafana squad, said they are well aware that Mozambique will come to this tie hoping to avenge last year’s defeat to the South Africans in the semifinals, adding that they won’t grant them the opportunity to do that.
In last year’s edition of the COSAFA Cup, South Africa handed Mozambique a 3-0 hiding en route to the final where they beat Senegal on penalties.
The 21-year old defender said everyone in the team shares the same aspirations of defending their title, adding that they won’t let anything stand in their way.
The quarter-final fixture between South Africa and Mozambique will take place at Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday at 17h00.
“We have prepared well against Mozambique and the boys are really looking forward to the clash,” Johannes said. “We have also analysed their play and we know areas in which to capitalise on as well as their strengths. We go there with an open mind as well, as anything can happen in football. But our focus still remains the same, and that is we want to win this fixture.”
Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana’s Team Doctor Thabo Maleka described Ethan Brooks knee injury as a manageable one, adding that he and his medical team have been working tirelessly to ensure the player recovers to full fitness again.
“Ethan sustained a knee injury which we have been treating and we are now working on his recovery in getting him back to the field of play again,” Dr Maleka said. “Unfortunately he will not be available for the Mozambique game, but he should be ready for selection in the next match after this one.”
