7 July 2022 – Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Lincoln Vyver reflected on last year’s COSAFA Cup experience as a good one, adding that he learned a lot from the eventual Goalkeeper of the  Tournament, Veli Mothwa.

Vyver, who only  managed to get one national cap out of the six matches played, said he was pleased to have kept a clean sheet in that 0-0 draw against Zambia. That outcome contributed in Bafana Bafana finishing the tournament without a single defeat.

The 21-year old said it felt great being on the winner’s end in that edition, adding he hopes to achieve the same feat in this year’s edition.

“My first and only game that I got to play in tournament was against Zambia,” Vyver said. “I was deputising for Mothwa who performed extremely well for the nation there. Having worked with him and been part of that Bafana Bafana squad before, my ambition is to now help the team defend this COSAFA title. It is not going to be easy but we’ll fight to the very end until that objective is achieved.”

Bafana Bafana will take on Mozambique in their first match of 2022 COSAFA Cup tournament in the quarter-finals. That match will take place on 13 July at Princess Magogo Stadium (Kick-off 17h00).

The Cape Town Spurs shot-stopper said it was very important for the national side to hit the ground running in that opening game.

“Mozambique is a side we beat in the knockout rounds of last year’s final and we are well aware they will come out motivated to avenge that result in this year’s edition,” Vyver said. “We have been working extremely hard in training to ensure that doesn’t happen and the beauty about it is we share the same mindset. And that is we want to defend this title and make our nation proud.”
