1 October 2021: It was a frustrating Friday afternoon for the high flying Banyana Banyana team who were held to a goalless draw by a defensive Angola in the second Group A match at the Nelson Mandela University stadium.

The hosts who pride themselves in creating a lot of chances, found it challenging to break Angola’s defence after knocking countless times.

The last time the two sides met, it was South Africa who came out victorious with a 2-0 victory, however this time Sousa Garcia’s troops were able to get the results in their favour and blow Group A wide open heading to the final Group games on Monday, 4 October 2021 where South Africa will face Mozambique and Angola will take on Malawi.

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis admitted to being disappointed with the results but still believes progression to the next round is still in their hands.

“I am not only disappointed in the results but also disappointed in the performance. Were poor in the first half but I felt we played better in the second half”, said Ellis.

“We speak a lot about bringing our A game in every match but I felt today we did not bring our A game and that has to change because the teams in this competition are coming out to play”.

“We created a lot of opportunities but our entries in the final third were not impressive and our decision making was also poor considering that we were not under pressure. But we did not concede and like we always say that if we don’t concede, we still have a chance”, added Ellis.

“We are still in it, but we have made it difficult for ourselves. A win today would have given us six points and placed us in a good position to progress to the next round. However it is still in our hands, we have to be better and give it our all in the next game,” the coach concluded.
