22 September 2021 – South Africa’s U20 Women’s National Team (Basetsana) are currently in Maputo, Mozambique for the first leg of the 2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup – Costa Rica, qualifier match against neighbours Mozambique.
The South African side under the tutelage of coach Jabulile Baloyi arrived in Maputo on Monday, 20 September 2021 where they continued their preparations for their first leg and first competitive match in almost two years due to the devastating covid-19 pandemic.
The team has settled well and is upbeat of the opening match.
Basetsana Head Coach, Jabulile Baloyi has selected most of his squad from the U17 National Team and is hopeful that they girls will do the country proud.
“We are very excited to be back playing football again. This is what we all love. The past year has been very frustrating for most of us. We have really missed playing international football,”said Baloyi.
“We will be playing Mozambique tomorrow, 23 September 2021 and we have selected a squad of players who come mostly from the previous U17 National Team.
‘’The current U17 National Team Head Coach, Simphiwe Dludlu will be my assistant for these qualifiers as most of these players were under her before their graduation into the u20 squad,” continued Baloyi.
“We believe we have a great team because many of them have international experience. Most of them play in the Hollywoodbets Super League and the few new faces have settled well into the team and seem hungry to also reach the milestones of the now “so-called” senior players in the squad,’’ she added.
Mozambique will host South Africa in the first leg of World Cup qualifiers on Thursday, 23 September 2021. This first leg match will be played at Campo Da Associacao Black Bulls in Maputo. Kick-off is scheduled for 15h00.
Basetsana will then travel back to South Africa on Friday 24 September 2021 and will host Mozambique in the second leg of qualifiers on Friday, 8 October 2021 at Dobsonville Stadium.
