28 January 2021 – The SAFA Referees Review Committee reviewed and came up with firm decisions on the following matches:

1 – PSL080 – Orlando Pirates v Swallows FC 10-01-2021

Referee: Jelly Chavani 4th Official: Kamohelo Ramutsindela
Assistant Referee 1: Emmanuel de Sani Assistant Referee 2: Sbusiso Sisilana
  • The referee, Jelly Chavani, was incorrect to deny Orlando Pirates a penalty in the 71st minute. The referee was also incorrect to caution Fortune Makaringe for simulation in this incident. The correct decision would have been to award a penalty in favour of Orlando Pirates.
  • As a result, the Review Committee has recommended that the referee not officiate any games in the PSL or Glad Africa Championship for a period of 4 (four) weeks, effective immediately.

2 – PSL089 – Kaizer Chiefs v Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 19-01-2021

Referee: Abongile Tom 4th Official: Akhona Makalima
Assistant Referee 1: Sbusiso Sisilana Assistant Referee 2: Emmanuel de Sani
  • Bernard Parker and Alfred Ndengane were both correctly sent off by the referee, Abongile Tom, for receiving two yellow cards.
  • Aluwani Nedzamba’s deliberate lunge on Bernard Parker in the 88th minute will be referred to the PSL for possible further disciplinary action.

3 – PSL090 – Mamelodi Sundowns v Bloemfontein Celtic 19-01-2021

Referee: Thokozani Mkhize 4th Official: Kamohelo Ramutsindela
Assistant Referee 1: Lalelani Mngadi Assistant Referee 2: Andile Mncwango
  • The match officials were correct to disallow Peter Shalulile’s goal in the 53rd minute. In terms of the latest Laws of the Game, even accidental handball offences must be punished if they occur just before a goal is scored.
  • The referee, Thokozani Mkhize and second assistant referee, Andile Mncwango, were incorrect to disallow the goal scored by Sera Motebang in the 61st minute. Motebang was not in an offside position. This incorrect decision had a direct impact on the outcome of the match.
  • The Review Committee has recommended that the second assistant referee, Andile Mncwango, not be appointed for games in the PSL or Glad Africa Championship for a period of 16 weeks.
  • The Review Committee has also recommended that the referee, Thokozani Mkhize not be appointed for games in the PSL or Glad Africa Championship for a period of 4 weeks.

4 – PSL093 – Orlando Pirates v Lamontville Golden Arrows 20-01-2021

Referee: Victor Gomes 4th Official: Kenneth Mamegwa
Assistant Referee 1: Shaun Olive Assistant Referee 2: Bongani Mnguni
  • The first assistant referee, Shaun Olive, was incorrect to rule that Terrence Dzvukamanja was in an offside position when he played the ball back to Fortune Makaringe in the 1st minute of play. Dzvukamanja was not in an offside position at the moment the ball was last touched or played to him by a teammate.
  • The Review Committee found that this decision was not a game-changing one, because the referee had already stopped play before the ball crossed the goal line.

5 – PSL095 – Supersport Utd v AmaZulu 20-01-2021

Referee: Phillip Tinyani 4th Official: Othusitse Modise
Assistant Referee 1: Thabang Matlhong Assistant Referee 2: Khamusi Razwimisani
  • The first assistant referee, Thabang Matlhong, was correct to rule that Siphelele Mthembu was in an onside position when he scored AmaZulu’s goal in the 33rd minute.
  • The referee, Philip Tinyani was correct to penalise Mario Booysen for a holding offence against Thamsanqa Gabuza, which led to a penalty for SuperSport Utd in the 76th minute.
  • The officials are commended for having correctly made some crucial and difficult decisions in this game.

6 – PSL096 – Moroka Swallows FC v Chippa Utd 20-01-2021

Referee: Luxolo Badi 4th Official: Kgara Mokoena
Assistant Referee 1: Moeketsi Molelekoa Assistant Referee 2: Jantjie Dlamini
  • The referee, Luxolo Badi and first assistant referee, Moeketsi Molelekoa, were correct to rule that Ruzaigh Gamildien did not handle the ball in the lead-up to his 11th minute goal for Moroka Swallows.
  • The referee and first assistant referee were also correct to rule that the ball had not crossed the line after Bienvenu Eva Nga’s shot from outside the penalty area in the 70th minute.
  • The officials are commended for having correctly made some crucial and difficult decisions in this game.

7 – PSL102 – Mamelodi Sundowns v Swallows FC 23-01-2021

Referee: Luxolo Badi 4th Official: Buhlebendawo Jobela
Assistant Referee 1: Athenkosi Ndongeni Assistant Referee 2: Lubabalo Pitsha
  • The match officials were correct to allow Musa Nyatama’s equalising goal in the dying moments of the game. Nyatama was not in an offside position when the ball was last played by his teammate.
  • The second assistant referee, Lubabalo Pitsha, is also commended for correctly penalising Ruzaigh Gamildien for a tight offside call in the 40th minute.

8 – PSL097 – Stellenbosch FC v Kaizer Chiefs 23-01-2021

Referee: Victor Hlungwani 4th Official: Msimileli Mabuto
Assistant Referee 1: Kamohelo Ramutsindela Assistant Referee 2: Lalelani Mngadi
  • The Review Committee found no reviewable decisions in this match.
  • The match officials are commended for a job well done.

9 – PSL099 – Maritzburg Utd v Orlando Pirates 23-01-2021

Referee: Thando Ndzandzeka 4th Official: Philangenkosi Khumalo
Assistant Referee 1: Mduduzi Thwala Assistant Referee 2: Jantjie Dlamini
  • The referee and the first assistant referee failed to correctly apply the Laws of the Game in incident 1, in that they failed to penalise Maritzburg no. 21 for a pushing offence on Pirates no. 23.
  • Barring the above incident, the match officials were consistent in their performance and are commended for a job well done.

10 – PSL100 – Cape Town City v Golden Arrows 24-01-2021

Referee: Tshidiso Maruping 4th Official: Victor Hlungwani
Assistant Referee 1: Thembinkosi Mangai Assistant Referee 2: Romario Phiri
  • The referee, Tshidiso Maruping, was correct to award a penalty in the 48th minute, when Taariq Fielies committed a holding offence against Knox Mutizwa. The referee cautioned Taariq Fielies for persistent offences.
  • The second assistant referee, Romario Phiri, is commended for the onside decision that allowed Mduduzi Mdantsane’s 75th minute goal to stand.
  • The match officials are commended for a job well done.
