20 November 2020 – SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan and CEO Advocate Tebogo Motlanthe have briefed the media on a number of issues from national teams, administration and also introduced the new SAFA Ethics Committee.

Dr Jordaan highlighted the performance of all of our national teams. Bafana Bafana have accumulated 9 points from 4 games, the same as log leaders Ghana.

Bafana beat Sao Tome 2-0 in Durban and 4-2 in Port Elizabeth three days later in vital back-to-back matches which has placed them in a good position to qualify for Cameroon Africa Cup of Nations. Their remaining two matches are against Ghana and Sudan at home and away respectively.

Banyana Banyana won the COSAFA Cup for the fourth year in a row having won the first group matches without conceding a goal. They beat Angola 2-0, eSwatini 5-0 and Comoros 7-0 to reach the semis.

They then beat Malawi 6-2 in the penultimate match before edging Botswana 2-1 in the final. Coach Desiree Ellis did not bring any of the overseas stars and assembled a locally based squad that comprised 5 members of the u20 team.

Currently, the u17 boys (Amajimbos) are taking part in the COSAFA Cup tournament currently under way in the Nelson Mandela Bay and next will be the u20 team that will also participate in the COSAFA Cup tournament.

Both the u17 and u20 tournaments will work as zonal qualifiers for the junior CAF AFCON tournaments.

The u23 recently went to Saudi Arabia where they played two games – losing one and drawing the other. This was part of their preparations for the Tokyo Olympics which were postponed to next year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

SAFA President said the two teams promoted to the GladAfrica National First Division proves the value of the ABC Motsepe League.

Bizana Pondo Chiefs, a rural team that hails from the Eastern Cape far-flung areas of Mbizana and Ntabankulu of the Alfred Nzo Region, stole the show.

Pretoria Callies managed to put a smile on the face of Lucas ‘’Masterpieces’’ Moripe who expressed his joy at seeing his former team back in the professional ranks.

The Winners of the ABC Motsepe national play offs, Bizana Pondo Chiefs received R1million prize money while Callies walked away with R500 00.

The winners of the SAFA Women’s national league, Mamelodi Sundowns received R500 00 while second placed TUT, walked away with R300 000. This is in spite of the fact that the league has no sponsor and SAFA ensured that the league completed their programme.

Former Acting Judge, Alex Abercrombie who is the SAFA integrity officer, has dealt with many matters referred to him. He conducted an integrity workshop for referees who signed an integrity agreement with SAFA.

He told the media that there was a lot of ground to be made but was up to the task.

The SAFA President introduced the new SAFA Ethics Committee which will deal with any ethical matters referred to it. SAFA National Executive Committee agreed to the appointment of Judge Sisi Khampepe, Justice Ronnie Pillay and Ms Candylee de Sousa as members.

SAFA has secured two recent sponsors: Le Coq Sportif and Multichoice with a combined value of over R120m over the period.

‘’We are still hard at work trying to secure additional sponsorship,’’ added SAFA President.

The administration has become leaner and more efficient and has reduced the monthly payroll cost by R2m, a saving of R24m annually.

Bafana Bafana players in company of SAFA executive that included SAFA President attended the tombstone unveiling ceremony of ex-captain Senzo Meyiwa in Durban ahead of them playing Sao Tome.

SAFA has also helped the family of late Banyana Banyana player, Makhosi Luthuli who passed away this week with burial arrangements.

The Association has turned the corner and will report a surplus of R63 million to the Annual Congress scheduled for 19 December 2020.

The 52 Regions received over R200 000 each and the administration paid over R10 million to Regions.
