23 June 2020 – Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Football Club has been crowned the inaugural champions of the 2020 SAFA National Women’s League, after the Association declared the season over due to the Corona Virus pandemic – with just one match remaining.
The Brazilians have set a number of records in the new Women’s League – the main one being that they won all their 21 matches – no loss or draw.
Sundowns amassed 63 points to run away with the league title.
They have scored an impressive 82 goals – the same number as second placed Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) who finished 11 points behind (54).
The two bitter rivals were scheduled to meet in the final match of the season which was set for Sunday, 29 March 2020 before the Corona virus pandemic brought every sporting activity to an abrupt stop.
Bloemfontein Celtic finished the season in third place, with 40 points while First Touch Academy came in fourth position a further six points behind.
Coal City Wizards and the University of Western Cape completed the top six in the 12-team league – they were fifth and sixth on 30 and 26 points respectively.
Durban Ladies, University of Johannesburg, Thunderbirds Ladies, Golden Ladies, Richmond Ladies and Tsunami Queens occupy positions 7 to 12 respectively.
