12 April 2020 – In light of growing concerns and evolving nature on COVID-19 amidst lockdown in most countries, the CAF Emergency Committee has decided to postpone the following matches until further notice:
– FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup Qualifiers: Initially scheduled for 1-3 May and 15-17 May 2020
Bantwana was due to face Morocco in the last round of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, after they overturned a 2-0 loss from the first leg to win 3-0 (3-2 aggregate victory).
The win earned Bantwana a spot in the final round of the qualifiers.
Morocco automatically made it through to the final phase after Botswana decided not to travel to North Africa for the second leg due to Coronavirus concerns. Morocco had won 1-0 in Botswana on 28 February 2020.
In the other clashes, Uganda is due to face Cameroon while Nigeria will take on Ghana – the overall winners will represent the African continent at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled to take place in India from 2-21 November 2020.
Also called off are the Total CAF Champions League and Total CAF Confederation Cup Semi- final matches – both legs were scheduled for the 1-3 May & 8-10 May 2020.
There are no South African teams left in the two competitions.
A new schedule will be announced in due time.
Meanwhile, CAF is monitoring the situation closely and working with the relevant authorities such as the Wealth Health Organization (WHO) on the impact of the virus on the continent.
