24 February 2020 – Former Confederation of African Football (Caf) General Secretary Amr Fahmy has died after a battle with cancer.
He was 36.
The Egyptian served as General Secretary between November 2017 and April 2019.
“We would like to express our deepest condolences on the passing of former CAF General Secretary Amr Famy who passed away on Sunday, 23 February 2020, in Cairo, Egypt, after a short illness,” said CAF in a statement.
“It is with great deal of sadness and emotions that we received the shock news. On behalf of CAF, we extend our deepest condolences to his family especially his parents, his spouse and daughter. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult moment, and may God have mercy on his soul.”
After leaving CAF, Fahmy spent time between Cairo and Paris where he was receiving treatment.
He leaves behind a wife and three-month-old daughter.
Fahmy, whose father and grandfather worked in the same capacity at CAF, was appointed to the post in November 2017, replacing Moroccan Hicham El Amrani.
Before becoming the secretary general, Fahmy also worked with the CAF Competitions Division between 2007 and 2015 and was the director of the Africa Cup Nations.
