20 February 2020 – Two goals in two games – that’s the story of Banyana Banyana forward Thembi Kgatlana, further enhancing the reason why Benfica in Portugal went for her signature.
The two strikes helped her new club to progress to the semi-final of the Portuguese Women’s Cup (the national cup competition). They beat Amora of Lisboa 11-2 at Estadio Da Tapadinha.
She did not get off the mark in her debut game, but they still managed to emerge 3-1 winners over Sporting Braga where she was used as a second half substitute.
Benfica has been on a roll recently registering 5-0 victory over Estoril Praia in an effort to defend their league title they won last season.
Kgatlana’s side opened their scoring against Amora in the 13th minute and doubled their lead five minutes later.
Mimi Asom grabbed her hattrick in the 25th, 27th and 37th minutes with Spetsmark scoring her second just before the break.
Raysla hit her brace for a 7-0 lead just after the restart. Asom increased the goals to eight in the 57th minute.
Amora tried to stage a fightback with when the scored their first in the 59th minute but Spetsman found the back of the net in the 65th minute with her third of the day, and ninth for Benfica.
Kgatlana came on for Asom 20 minutes before the final whistle and scored a minute later.
In the 80th minute she was on the scoresheet again with the her second of the day, and 11th of her side.
Amora did score their second but it was a little too late as they went down 11-2.
Benfica next faces Sporting CP in the Women’s National League (Campeonato Nacional Feminino) and Kgatland will be hoping her exploits will have won her a place in the starting team.
