13 February 2020 – With the midway point of the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Men’s Regional League (SAB) fast approaching, all provinces across the country are gearing up for bumper weekends, particularly having been starved of action over the festive period.

The importance of this fourth tier feeder league as well as the U21 Championships, should not be underestimated, especially within the grand context of South African football and the vision going forward.

One particular region that has proved to be ultra-competitive and indeed unpredictable, has been none other than Cape Town, an area that has always delivered the goods and produced many a talent over the decades.

Currently there are at least five or six teams who are firmly in the running for title honors and this coming weekend will give us further clues as to which clubs are peaking at the right time, with all 16 teams doing battle in a blockbuster couple of days.

Saturday, 15th February will see seven key games taking place, the first of which sees joint table-toppers Crystal Palace FC hosting Cape Town City FC at ‘The Greens’ in Manenberg. Palace currently sit in first place along with Silver Spurs FC but have a game in hand and will be looking to keep up the pressure on their rivals with another solid showing. Kick-off is at 13h00.

Bellstar United then entertain Cape Town United at Symphony Park at 15h00. The home team are currently in 14th spot and will be desperate for all three points while United will be looking to climb into the top half of the table.

Third placed Woodlands United FC then travel to fifth placed Greenwood Athletic in one of the marquee match-ups of the weekend. The game will take place at Solo Street Sports Complex at 15h00. Both clubs are still firmly in the running for the title.

Tenth place Junction Rovers have a daunting task ahead as they host log leaders Spurs at Heideveld Sports Complex at 15h00. Spurs will be under pressure to keep their top spot and their rivals could use this to their advantage to try and get a result.

Elsbury Park will host yet another 15h00 match when bottom club Matroosfontein FC welcome Rebels FC. With a mere seven points from twelve games (-14 goal difference), nothing less than a victory will do for the home team who will be relying on their vociferous home supporters to act as their 12th man.

Ocean View AFC will then make their way to Nova Nacional FC’s Hickory Road Stadium in a 15h00 kick-off. Nova are currently in sixth place and are also still in contention for the highest honours. Pundits are predicting a narrow win for the home team.

In the day’s final match, Goals 50 United tackle Bluegum United, also at Heideveld. This game is scheduled for 17h00. The home club will be aiming to climb out of 13th spot while Bluegum will be pushing to consolidate their top half placing.

Sunday’s only fixture sees Hanover Park playing host to Cape Umoya FC at Downberg Road Sports Complex in a battle between teams at opposite ends of the table. Hanover occupy fourth after an impressive run while Umoya languish in 15th place.

A truly exciting weekend of football is expected in Cape Town’s SAB League.
