6 December 2019 – From the days of Mark and Neil Tovey, SA football has seen many siblings play in the topflight.
More recently, AmaZulu left back Tsepo Masilela and Orlando Pirates’ Innocent Maela, who play in the same position, have added to the list, though they have different surnames, because they only share a father.
The latest to emerge, and following in his brother’s footsteps is Ian Makaringe, who’s the younger brother of Bucs midfielder, Fortune Makaringe.
Ian can be seen showing off his skills at this year’s Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge at Nike Football Training Centre in Klipspruit, Soweto.
The 18-year-old, who hails from Vosloorus on the East Rand, is stepping right into Fortune’s footsteps.
Like his big brother, Ian is an attacking midfielder.
And like Fortune, he is honing his skills at SAB League side Golden Boys, the same team Fortune played for previously.
The similarities don’t end there.
Fortune is a former school teacher at Buhle Park High School in Germiston, but quit to play football and Ian, on the other hand, wants to become a teacher too after matriculating at Thuto Lesedi Secondary in Vosloorus.
Ian, however, reckons he’s a better footballer than Fortune!
If his words are anything to go by then he’d graduate from the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge to play in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) sooner than expected.
“The aim is to create my own path, because I think I can do better,” says Ian, who represents NC Zasko in the 17th edition of the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge.
“I want create my own brand rather than promote my brother’s hand. He’s done his part and I have to do my part,” he insists.
Ian is happy to take Fortune’s advice, though.
“He told me to play my own game and be disciplined on and off the field. My brother said I should respect the game.”
They say to be the best you have to compete against the best. This rings true for the young man.
“I play against the best at Discovery and I need to show my capabilities – what I can bring to the team,” he states
Ultimately, the team comes first and Ian is looking forward to helping Zasco win the tournament.
