4 December 2019 – On Monday, 2 December 2019 Sasol in collaboration with the South African Football Association (SAFA) hosted the first #Limitless Leaders event for captains of the 2019 Sasol League National Championship finalists. Banyana Banyana captain Janine van Wyk, Thembi Kgatlana, Lydia Monyepao and the legendary Fran Hilton Smith attended the event in the aim of inspiring the captains as the future leaders of women’s football in South Africa.

A first of its kind, the #Limitless Leaders event was also designed to challenge the captains to step up as they lead their teams into the 2019 Sasol League National Championship. Former Banyana Banyana captain Lydia Monyepao and other role models shared their stories, interacting with the captains, and engaging on various topics making sure that they are inspired to take women’s football forward.

Reflecting on the event, Executive Ladies captain Qawekazi Jazi said, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to not only meet my role models but sit and interact with them in one room. One thing I took from the session is that as a captain I need to get to know my teammates and treat everyone equally. I need to lead by example and always lift their spirit when we go through challenges.”

The #Limitless Leaders forms part of Sasol’s #Limitless initiative which aims to empower women footballers on and off the field.

“As a Banyana Banyana captain myself, I have come to learn so much about leading a team. Today I shared my journey and experience at the biggest showcase of women’s football; the FIFA Women’s World Cup. It is always a privilege to be part of such initiatives where I have the opportunity to inspire others and help instil that belief in themselves. Women’s football is undeniably growing and it is up to us to take it to greater heights,” Janine van Wyk added.

Emphasising on Sasol’s goal, the Senior Group Brand Manager Nozipho Mbatha said “We are excited to launch yet another initiative for women in football, proving just how committed we are about growing the sport. It was great to see our Sasol League captains interact and learn from the best in the country. We hope they take what they have learned and apply it in their respective journeys going forward.”

The top teams from all nine provinces are currently competing at the 2019 Sasol League National Championship taking place in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni.

The competition started on Tuesday, 3 December and will come to an end on Sunday, 8 December 2019.
