South Africa – 2 (Marhazi 17’; Wade 50’)
Zambia – 1 (Chilenga 28’)
27 September 2019 – A 17th minute goal from Oyisa Marhazi and a cracker from range by Jessica Wade in the 50th minute booked South Africa their ticket to the finals of the inaugural COSAFA U17 Women’s Championships which will conclude on Sunday, 29 September 2019, at St Francois Xavier Stadium in Mauritius.
Zambia, who are no strangers to playing against South Africa gave Bantwana quiet the challenge as they parked the bus and wanted to play long balls behind the defence.
This worked for them when captain Chilenga scored from range in the 28th minute after a miscommunication between the South African defenders.
After a very tough derby which ended 2-1 in favour of Bantwana, Head Coach Simphiwe Dludlu believes her side has a lot of to work to do ahead of the final against a very burly Ugandan side on Sunday.
“Congratulations to the players on this great effort. They played good football against a tough opponent;” said Dludlu.
“I am proud of them and could not ask for more today. They played their hearts out to the final whistle.
We knew that Zambia would come at us, and play the long balls. We managed to contain them in crucial areas of the field and managed to also play our football, they also played the type of football that suited them but we managed to get the win.
This was a great match for development football, and we would once again like to thank COSAFA for implementing this much needed tournament in our region;”said Dludlu.
