23 August 2019 — South Africa’s National Under-20 (Amajita) side lost 4-0 to Burkina Faso in their final 2019 All Africa Games Group A match at the Stade Municipal El Mansouria in Mansouria, Morocco.
Burkina Faso captain, Djibril Ouattara, proved himself the hero of the day with his explosive runs into scoring positions, converting a hat trick out of the opportunities created by his side.
Burkina will now progress into the knockout stages of this competition together with Nigeria, Senegal and Mali after these four teams finished within the top two bracket of their respective groups.
Elliassa Dianda was the first one to put his name on Burkina Faso’ score sheet after he receiving a superb pass unmarked inside the 18-yard box.
Dianda made full use of the granted opportunity and pulled a curled shot to beat Buhle Damane between the sticks.
Amajita fought really hard for a comeback, however, Burkina Faso’s rearguard was just too solid for them to break.
In the 20th minute, Amajita got an opportunity to pull one back before the halftime break, however, Onke Moletshe’s long range shot outside the 18-yard box was denied by the opposition goalkeeper.
Ouattara made it 2-0 just before the halftime break with a lob shot, after spotting Damane away from his line to make the required save.
In the second half, Ouattara scored his second of the match with a powerful shot after he was found unmarked inside the 18-yard box.
Amajita’s interim coach Helman Mkhalele made a few substitutions, bringing in debutant Reamohetswe Maqala and Junior Nare for Dante Brown and Sphiwe Nkabinde respectively, to press his opponents up in the final third.
From this point onwards, Amajita played with more aggression pressing forward, however, Burkina Faso’s defensive wall was just not willing to budge.
Ouattara score Burkina Faso’s final goal in the 60th minute to secure the 4-0 victory for the West African side.
Amajita flew back to South Africa straight after that match via Dakar, Senegal and are expected to land at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday (24 August) at 17h05.
