11 August 2019 – Head coach of the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis is excited with the way her charges pulled off the victory in the 2019 COSAFA Women’s Championship – they won five matches, beating Comoros 17-0, Malawi 3-1, Madagascar 3-0, Zimbabwe 2-1 and Zambia 1-0 in the final.

In total, they scored 26 goals, conceding only two goals.

There were 11 different goal scorers – Refiloe Jane, Amanda Mthandi, Bambanani Mbane, Tiisetso Makhubela, Ode Fulutudilu, Hilda Magaia, Mamello Makhabane, Lebohang Ramalepe, Noxolo Cesane and Kholosa Biyana.

All the 20 players selected for the tournament also got a run.

South Africa has now won the COSAFA Cup three times in row, and a record six times.

The good news is that defender Makhubela, who was stretchered off in the final due to a suspected head injury, and taken to hospital for observation, is back in camp and recovering well.

Banyana Banyana’s next challenge is the 2020 Olympic qualifier against Botswana at the end of the month.
