31 July 2019 – League leaders Spurs WFC squandered their chance going six points clear at the top of the Western Cape Sasol League after a surprising 3-2 defeat at home to Ikamva United on Saturday, 27 July.
Spurs hosted Ikamva at William Herbert Stadium looking to go clear of second-placed UCT who were beaten 2-1 by Dangerous Heroes a day before.
“It was a disappointing performance from our side,” Spurs head coach Winston Zeederburg told SAFA.net after the game. “We were totally in control of the game and we just threw it away following a number of individual and team errors.”
Saturday’s defeat marked the first time this season that Spurs gave away all the three points in a league tie. Prior to the game, the Cape Town-based outfit had won 13 of their 15 games, drawing the other two.
“We’re disappointed because we came here to win,” added Zeederburg. “But at the end of the day, it was about who wanted it more, they tucked their chances away as we were squandering ours.”
Ikamva climbed one place up to 10th on the league table following their shock win and they are now two points behind ninth-placed Cape Town Roses who were beaten 4-0 by Vasco da Gama on the same day.
Meanwhile, Santos thrashed LIDZ FC 13-0 to move to within six points of league leaders Spurs.
