10 July 2019 – With a 4th FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy in their cabinet, the unbeaten United States and their stars rewrote some records:

  • 26 goals – a new record
  • 17 games unbeaten – 12 consecutive wins
  • Jill Ellis is the first coach to win 2 FIFA Women’s World Cup trophies
  • Megan Rapinoe is the first player to score multiple goals in back to back knockouts matches

USA icons

  • Tobin Heath, Ali Krieger, Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd played their 3rd FIFA Women’s Women’s World Cup final, joining Germany Birgit Prinz on that mark
  • Rapinoe eclipsed Lloyd as the oldest goal scorer in a final

A very special Birthday

  • Alex Morgan became the 1st player to score a FIFA Women’s World Cup goal on her birthday – it was during the 2-1 win semifinal win over England
  • She has now scored in 2 FIFA Women’s World Cup semifinals, equaling Bettina Wiegmann and Josephine Oqvist

But of course not everything was about the USA

  • 7 European teams reached the last 8
  • No Asian teams made the quarterfinals for the 1st time
  • Netherlands vs Sweden was the first semifinal in fwwc history decided in extra time

Unbelievable comeback

  • Argentina became the 1st team to recover a 3-goal deficit and take something from a FIFA Women’s World Cup match
  • They trailed 3-0 to Scotland heading into the 74th minute and drew 3-3

Italian inspiration

  • A brace against Jamaica
