23 May 2019 – The South African Football Association’s (SAFA) premier women’s football league is proving to be a thrill-a-minute this season, none more so than in the Gauteng edition.

Whereas last season saw an intense relegation tussle, this year is proving to be a keen battle at the top of the standings.

The likes of Tuks, Luso Africa and JVW FC are all gunning for the title this time around and none of these clubs seem to be giving an inch.

One team that stands out is Luso Africa, a team that are competing in only their second Sasol League season after finishing in 14th position last year.

The Ekurhuleni-based club who ply their trade at Hattingh Park in Germiston, are currently 2nd on the log, hot on the heels of leaders Tuks, with just a point separating the two after 8 completed matches.

SAFA.net managed to catch up with head coach Mr Dylan Wilson, who shared some of his thoughts on last season, insights into the new-found success and future goals.

“We had a decent first season considering how new we were. We were very competitive at times. Our aim was to avoid relegation and we accomplished that goal,” stated Wilson.

With regard to the current form displayed by his team, Wilson is happy with the work-ethic shown by his chargers.

“The girls work very hard to improve each week. We have recruited new players in the off-season and they are gelling quite well with the older players,” he said.

On the clubs goals for the season, Wilson was very confident and also hinted as to what fans can expect from the team in 2019.

“We are aiming for a top 4 finish and at the very least a top half placing. We also wish to think broader and develop talent, create opportunities and open doors for young girls. We recently had four U17s on the pitch at the same time, which is great to see and very exciting as my dream is to promote the women’s game,” enthused the coach.

He also lamented the fact that players from smaller teams such as Luso don’t get recognised for national selection but vowed to get his girls noticed and pleaded for a sponsor to assist with travel and other running costs.

Wilson also offered a quick thought or two on the MYSAFA registration and competition management system.

“It is very good concept that helps broaden the spectrum. Hopefully it runs across all leagues to cut out cheating but it is also very convenient. I wish that more features can be added though so that everyone has access to view intricate details and statistics of players as this will spark public interest,” concluded Wilson.

With a positive coach and the exuberant youth at his disposal, there is little doubt that Luso are a team on the rise.

The team is in action next Sunday (26 May) at home against Blue Birds FC at 15h30.
