17 May 2019 – Steenberg United managed to retain the Western Cape ABC Motsepe League title with a stunning 6-0 thrashing of the relegated D&G Orient on Saturday, 11 May.

After failing to get past the group stages of 2018 ABC/NFD National Promotional Playoffs, Steenberg returned to the ABC Motsepe League hoping to retain their league title which would automatically grant them a second chance on the playoffs.

Coach Mike Lukhubene and his charges managed to retain the league title following a long and hard-fought season which saw them collect 69 points in 30 games.

Going into the match with a two-point lead over The Magic, Steenberg knew they needed to win the game ensure that they retain the league title.

Goals from Valentino Fredericks, Robin Rhode, Athini Jodwana, Lyle Peters and a double from Colin Ryan sealed the three points for Lukhebene’s side and subsequently, cleared a passage to the playoffs.

Speaking to SAFA.net, Lukhubene said it was never easy for them to defend the title and praised his backroom staff and the players for their commitment.

“I have huge respect of the Western Cape ABC Motsepe League “I respect my technical team, they have done a fantastic job, well done to them. I take my hat off to my players as well for commitment throughout the season.”

During the 2018 playoffs in Polokwane, Steenberg was drafted into group B, alongside Mangaung Unite and Mvoti United. They won their opening game against Mangaung before falling to a 1-0 defeat against Umvoti in their second and final game of the tournament as they finished last on their group.

The 2019 edition will be hosted in the Western Cape Province, in the beautiful city of Cape Town and Steenberg will be hoping to make home advantage count as they look to replace Ubuntu Cape Town who have been relegated to the Western Cape ABC Motsepe League from the National First Division.
