18 April 2019 – Former World Cup referee Jerome Damon has been appointed FIFA’s Referee Development Officer for Africa.

Damon will be working alongside another official from Rwanda and both will cover the continent.

He has had to quit his job of 17 years as a teacher in Cape Town.

Damon is also the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) training instructor for Africa. The new sytem will be used for the first time on the continent at the upcoming 2019 AFCON, but only from the round of 16.

He officiated at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He has twice been named South African referee of the year.
