Senong names provisional squad for FIFA World Cup

29 March 2019 – South Africa’s National Under-20 head coach Thabo Senong has named 75 players as part of his provisional squad leading up to this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland Edition.

This global football showpiece runs from 23 May –15 June 2019.

It is from this squad that Senong will select 50 players that are to be submitted to FIFA by 1 April 2019 as the initial squad.

This total will further be trimmed down to the final 21-man World Cup squad that is to represent South Africa on the world stage and is this is to be submitted to FIFA by 12 May 2019.

Speaking shortly after returning from his European tour where he spent time scouting players for his Amajita squad, Senong stated that he was pleased with the quality of players he had identified there.

“I am happy with the players we have identified for our provisional squad,” Senong said.

“We are now in the process of trimming it down to 50 which is required by FIFA as our initial squad. We are working really hard to make sure that we send out a balanced group of players who will help us prepare well and be ready for the upcoming World Cup event.

“The final 21-man squad is expected to be submitted on 12 May 2019.”

In the upcoming World Cup event, Amajita are in the same group (Group F) with Argentina, South Korea and Portugal. The top two in the Group will progress to the next round, something Senong said was his primary goal.

Amajita will first play Argentina, the six time World Champions, on 25 May at the Tychy Stadium, before they lock horns with Korea Republic and Portugal.

The match against Korea Republic will also take place at the Tychy Stadium on 28 May, while their final group fixture against Portugal will take place at the Bielsko-Biala Stadium on 31 May.

All matches kicks-off at 20h30 local time.
