22 March 2019 – South Africa u23 side began their CAF Olympic qualifier with a convincing 3-1 away win over Angola in Luanda.

Goals by Phakamani Mahlambi in the 7th min, Thendo Mukumela in the 16th min and Grant Magerman in the 68th min saw SA take control of this encounter before Angola pulled one back in the dying minutes of the game.

The Angolan goal proved just a mere consolation as David Notoane’s side showed they want to go all the way to Tokyo 2020.

It was a bold performance by South Africa who opened the score as early as the 7th minute. Industrious Luther Singh left a host of defenders in their wake before squaring for Mahlambi who made no mistake from inside the box.

In the 16th minute, Mukumela doubled South Africa’s advantage when he rifled home a scorcher.

Notoane’s boys then took total control of the match as they created many chances that could have buried the game.

The hosts came back strongly in the second half but were caught by a sucker punch in the 68th minute when hardworking Magerman rounded off the Angolan defence before burying a good goal.

The second leg will take place on Tuesday, 26 March at Milpark Stadium.

The match kicks off at 19h00
