7 March 2019 – SAFA Gauteng in partnership with Gauteng Provincial Government and GSI Global conducted the draw of the 2019 Gauteng Cup for U17 at SAFA House on Thursday, 7 March 2019.

The tournament is in its 10th year and the partners announced the inclusion of a girls’ tournament in this year’s edition. This will comprise of the five Gauteng SAFA Regions and the school that won the Gauteng Schools Cup, Dr BW Vilakazi School.

The Gauteng Provincial government said they had made it ‘our mission to ensure that the girl child is also active in competitive football.’

Director of Competitive Sport, Ms Philasande Muvevi said they were happy to have six female teams in this year’s Edition.

The group stages of the girls’ tournament will be played on 17 March 2019, with the top 2 teams battling it out for the top honours.

The boys stage will be played between 16 -17 March 2019 at WJ Clement Stadium in Reiger Park, Ekhuruleni. The participating teams are the six Gauteng-based Premier Soccer League’s development sides and the winner between National First Division sides Jomo Cosmos and Tuks (in a match to be played on Thursday night).

“Through the Gauteng Cup, we have produced players who have gone to represent the country in the past and we expect more stars to come out of this year’s tournament,” said SAFA Johannesburg President, Mr Phil Mogodi.
