1 February 2019 – Goals, tension, drama and all-out entertainment were the hallmark of the first half of the Eastern Cape edition of the ABC Motsepe League. If this is anything to go by, the second half is bound to be that much better.

Further proof of this is the seven-way battle for overall honours with things looking decidedly tight at the top of the table.

One of the teams locked on the heat of this tussle are Port Elizabeth-based Sibanye FC, who are also gunning for the title after struggling in previous seasons.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) had the opportunity to catch up with Sibanye Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Brendan Bosman, who provided some interesting insights into the season thus far, as well as a message for the fans.

“Last year our aim was simply to avoid relegation as we were never in the title race. We sat down with the Executive Committee and ironed out a plan to improve. We knew what type of players we had to bring in and roped in Bloemfontein Celtic as a strategic partner. They provided us with a few Premier Soccer League (PSL) players who offered valuable tips and ideas,” said Bosman.

The club currently lie in second position, one point behind leaders Tornado, after 17 completed games. The likes of Mthatha Bucks, PE Stars and Bizana Pondo Chiefs are also hot on the heels of the leaders. Bosman though is not looking too far ahead.

“Our short-term goal is to keep the pressure on Tornado, who we still have to play away. We have to ensure we pick up points at home so that we keep in touch. We need to fly under the radar. The play-offs are our primary focus. Obviously our long-term goal is the PSL, which is possible as the owners have invested well, but one step at a time,” added Bosman.

The charismatic CEO also had a message for the loyal fans of the club.

“Our fans have been really amazing. They were fantastic during the derby match against PE Stars. I wish to thank them and assure them that we would love to give something back by trying to get them to the away games. Financially it is tough though,” said the CEO.

Finally, the boss offered a quick word on SAFA’s revolutionary MYSAFA software registration and competition management system.

“I am really impressed with this system as it allows for easy access and helps us to see where we stand with player registrations. It is great platform that will benefit SA football as a whole in the future,” concluded Bosman.

The club are next in action at home on Friday evening (1 February) against Future Tigers FC at the Adcock Stadium. Kick-off is at 19h00.
