27 December 2018 – The Gauteng MEC in the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Ms. Faith Mazibuko, has applauded Discovery, the Soweto Football Association (SFU) and the Walter Sisulu Foundation for the tremendous job of bringing a structured football tournament in Soweto.
The Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge, currently underway at the Nike Football Training Centre, is steadily approaching the finals of the tournament as teams reached of the quarter-finals on Thursday, 27 December 2018. The MEC attended the tournament last weekend to ensure that the clubs and community members of Soweto know that the government supports townships tournaments.
“Firstly, I would like to commend Discovery for partnering with the Soweto Football Association; it shows the commitment that Discovery has in developing South Africa football and shows that they are investing in the growth of sports in our country. I am most excited that there are ladies teams taking part in the tournament as we want to ensure that women get the same exact opportunity as men do in all sporting codes. This tournament ensures that youngsters stay away from social ills that have a negative impact on their lives. This tournament is a platform for these players to develop their talents and get a chance to get scouted by top professional clubs.
As the Gauteng Provincial Government, we will be dedicating resources to ensure that woman’s sports is further developed, we have realized the disadvantages that exist within this industry and we have noticed where as we as government must p lay an important role in their career, if we put in more effort to ensure the woman’s sport is given the same in such male sports. The Minister of Sports and the team are starting to implement a rule where each and every sports tournament there should a 50% representative, if you don’t put in the quota they will never do it. Even the executives at SAFA have been told to ensure that women have the same opportunities as men”
In addition, The MEC applauded all the volunteers and community members that are involved, who have dedicated their time and energy in the tournament ensuring that the event runs smoothly.
