22 November 2018 – Coming off a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the Old Mutual Stadium on Friday, 16 November evening against The Magic, Steenberg United have an opportunity to extend their Western Cape ABC Motsepe League winning streak to six games this weekend.

The defending champions will travel to Santos Academy Stadium to play eighth-placed Santos FC on Saturday afternoon at 15h00, hoping to continue their impressive form which saw them keep six clean sheets in their last eight games. The strong defence seems to have also spurred the Magic’s prolific attack, which has scored an impressive 20 goals this season.

Steenberg head coach Mike Lukhubene praised his team after the Magic’s game but stressed the importance of doing well against Santos.

“You have to have a short memory in the ABC Motsepe League,” Lukhubene warned. “We’ve put that one in the back of our minds and we’ve moved on to Santos.”

Saturday’s game poses a daunting challenge as Steenberg takes on The People’s Team, who will be determined to end their three game winless streak which includes back-to-back defeats in their last two games. Lukhubene stressed that his opponents’ poor run of form would not affect their performance on Saturday.

“They’re a good team, a win or a loss might come our way,” Lukhubene said. “They are one of the best teams in the province either way, so their current form won’t have a bearing on our game.”

Following Saturday’s matchup, Steenberg will host ninth-placed Jomo Powers on Friday, 7 December, and then travel to HBU FC a week later before the Christmas break.
