17 October 2018 – The Free State ABC Motsepe League delivered some mouth-watering action this past weekend on match-day five.

All fixtures took place on Saturday, October 13, as teams at both ends of the table endured mixed fortunes.

Days FC hosted Dikwena United FC in what turned out to be a low scoring 1-1 thriller at the Zuka Baloyi Stadium.

Central University then welcomed bottom placed DLA2 FC in a relegation battle for the ages as the home team somehow managed a 2-0 victory that looks more comfortable on paper than it actually was. The away side displayed an attacking style of football but simply couldn’t convert, and remain rooted in 16th position.

Free State Stars then stunned Bloemfontein Celtic FC in their own backyard in a classic 3-2 thriller that ebbed and flowed throughout. Westdene Sports Ground was fortunate enough to witness the scintillating end-to-end action. Stars climbed to fifth while Celtic remain in seventh place.

Super Eagles earned a hard-fought 2-1 win over Knowledge Glen FC at Bethlehem Showground while Harmony FC got the better of Small Tigers at Bluegumbusch Stadium by two goals to nil to maintain their 100% record and second spot on the log.

Sibanye Golden Starsmade home advantage count when they edged Kovsies in a tense encounter at Beatrix Mine. Stars hold on to their third place while Kovsies languish in the wrong half of the table.

Kovsies head coach Godfrey Tenoff is hoping to get things right in the next few games.

“We are inconsistent and that needs to change really fast. It is a very tough league. We are hoping our fortunes change sooner rather than later. Getting it right early though is the difference between playing for something and playing for nothing as you don’t really have the luxury of time,” lamented Tenoff.

There was to be another away victory as Lijabatho FC beat Mphatlalatsane United FC at Phuthaditjhaba Stadium. A slick, professional performance earned them a solid 2-1 win to keep them in eighth spot.

The final game of the weekend saw leaders Mangaung Unite earning three vital points against BFN Young Tigers. It takes their tally to five wins from five for 15 points and top spot due to a superior goal difference to Harmony.
