10 October 2018 – It may only be October and six rounds into the season, but Friday’s clash between Steenberg United and FN Rangers is already shaping up as an early-season eliminator to challenge runaway leaders The Magic for the Western Cape ABC Motsepe Leaguetitle.
Despite being at home and 11 points above the winless Rangers, second-placed Steenberg will be quite wary of the Rangers’ desperateness to get a win against a team of their stature which would give them much needed confidence that they can turn their season’s fortunes.
Steenberg’s 2-0 victory over Grassy Park United on their most recent league outing which happened concurrently with Rangers’ 7-1 thrashing by Zizwe United, means the hosts will go into this high in confidence despite their uninspiring draw against Ikapa Sporting a week before.
“It will be a measure of ourselves playing there,” Rangers head coach Arreshaat Daniels told SAFA.net
“We are slowly but surely getting accustomed to this division and we are getting there. They are the reigning champions and the expectation for them is always to win, especially at NY49 Stadium.”
Looking to maintain a perfect start to the season is The Magic FC who have won six of their opening six games. On Friday, 12 October, they welcome D&G Orient at the Old Mutual Stadium whilst Ajax Cape Town will be looking to extend their undefeated run to five games when they host Morning Stars on the same evening.
