04 October 2018 – Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape became the first two teams to progress into this year’s SAFA U-19 Women’s Regional League Championship semi-finals, currently taking place at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto on Thursday.

Mpumalanga handed the KwaZulu-Natal province a 4-1 hiding to finish as winners of Group B with nine points, while a 6-0 drubbing of Northern Cape was enough to see Eastern Cape finish in second place in that very group with six points.

In the other group, Western Cape finished as Group A winners after thrashing Limpopo with a 13-1 scoreline. Such an impressive scoreline played a massive part in Western Cape finishing as Group A winners as both them and runners-up, Gauteng province, were tied on 10 points after all completed group matches played.

Gauteng beat the Free State province with a 4-2 scoreline to also book their place in this year’s final four of the tournament.

Meanwhile SAFA’s head of women’s football, Fran Hilton-Smith, expressed her delight over how the tournament has been run thus far. Hilton-Smith also stated that this was for the first time ever that SAFA had all nine provincial teams led by women, both in technical and managerial positions.

“It makes me really happy to state that we are achieving our goals of pushing equality within the sport. This is the first time ever in a SAFA’s women’s tournament that all provincial teams are led by women in managerial and technical staff positions. That makes me really happy because it is great for the development of women’s football in the country,” said Hilton-Smith.
