01 October 2018 – Head coach of the South African U20 Women’s National Team (Basetsana), Maud Khumalo is excited about the 2018 SAFA U19 Women’s Regional League Championship.

The former Banyana Banyana player was speaking at the launch and draw of the tournament held at the SAFA Technical Centre (Fun Valley) held on Tuesday night (1 October 2018).

The annual women’s national tournament will run from 2–6 October 2018 at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville Soweto, where nine provinces will battle it out in pursuit of being crowned this year’s champions.

Khumalo, who will serve as one of the selectors during the tournament, says that this is a great platform to identify undiscovered talent for the women’s national teams.

“We will use this tournament as a platform to identify talent for our national women’s Under-20 squad. We are currently on a rebuilding phase and so we are looking forward to the type of talent this tournament is going to offer us,” said Khumalo.

“This is a very important tournament because a whole lot of (retired) players such as myself, Jabulile Baloyi and COSAFA Women’s Championship back-to-back winner Desiree Ellis, were discovered at inter-provincial tournaments such as this one. You get to see the best of the best of what our country has to offer, talent wise.”
