6 September 2018 – SAFA (SOUTH AFRICAN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION) and associate member SAMLFA (SOUTH AFRICAN MASTERS AND LEGENDS FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION) have partnered with We Are Football™ to activate a grassroots festival as part of supporting the vision 2022 programme targeting ages 5-7 for the launch. This will part of the programme to drive interest in football at pre-school age to inspire future players whilst getting legends and parents to consider the D-License badge. The expansion of the national teams’ fan base is also a consideration by introducing young kids to national team events and matches as part of growing the game. The aim is to activate such at all national team matches nationally.
David Nyathi the Secretary General of SAMLFA and other legends will be taking the boys and girls through their fun drills before the AFCON 2019 qualifier against Libya on Saturday the 8 September 2018. The legends association is excited to partner this programme and looking to get more ex-footballer to enroll in this programme. “We need to engage the young players as they have lots more options than we had at their age to fall in love and have fun with football using the 2018 FIFA World Cup’s momentum and also creating affinity with Bafana Bafana” said David Nyathi. “This is the beginning and we want to recruit more young players to increase the base and ensure that these kids enjoy football at their age and also find resonance with SAFA’s marketing campaign “COME SHOW YOUR LOVE”” said the legend who will be joined by the SAMLFA vice-president and Bafana Bafana legend Phil Masinga.
Masinga emphasized that SAFA and it’s technical Neil Tovey needs their support to create the groundswell with the festivals to drive D-License and grassroots football in general. This part of their contribution to the vision in the various SAFA committees that their members and other ex-players serve, especially the technical committee.
For this first activation of We Are Legends 4 Kids, parents and guardians in the Durban area can register their kids on www.wearefootball.africa for a spot on this Saturday’s festival. The kids will get the drills by the legends, face painted, get supporter t-shirt and match tickets for parents/guardians.
