27 August 2018 – The Eastern Cape Sasol League saw some interesting fixtures taking place this past weekend as the race to be crowned Eastern Cape champions intensifies with the season fast approaching its conclusion.

City Lads, who occupy top spot with 51 points from 17 wins and a single loss had to give it their all against a resilient Cumakala FC who gave the log leaders a torrid afternoon away from home. Cumakala are in danger of being relegated and will be hoping to put up the same performance but accompanied by goals this coming weekend when they take on the struggling Bashee Eagles FC.

Thunderbirds Ladies look determined to push Lads right up to the end for the title. Ladies are hot on the trails of the log leaders and are separated by just two points with a game in hand. The title chasers continued in their fine form this past weekend when they thrashed Golden Stars 3-0 in their own backyard to keep the pressure on Lads. Sophokama Ladies were ruthless in front of goal as they thumped Highbury FC 5-0 to move up to seventh on the table while Amanqilo Birds edged Ayakha Stars Ladies 3-2 in a high scoring encounter.

Eluhewini Ladies’ 1-0 win over Bashee Eagles who are on a downward spiral of late sees them get a bit of a breather from the relegation battle but would need to keep getting results in the next fixtures to be completely safe from the dagger.
