24 August 2018 – In a beautiful football match, not dampened by the torrential downfall, UKZN showed great character, coming from two goals down following a disappointing start to the campaign by the home team.

UWC scored in the opening seconds as Xolisa Makubalo finished coolly to hand his side the lead. Not long after that Jaydan Peterson volleyed superbly to double his side’s lead after just 11 minutes.

UKZN pulled one back through Bongumenzi Zulu on the 25-minute mark to ensure his team was not out of the contest at the break. The match went in at halftime with the side from Western Cape at an advantage of 2-1.

UKZN came back like a house on fire and claimed an equalising goal courtesy of Tholinhlanhla Zondi on the hour mark. The home side were beginning to stamp their authority on the match.

UWC almost disappointed the home side when they went back up with third goal and a second for Xolisa Makubalo with just minutes remaining, but UKZN were resilient and equalized through Bongumenzi Zulu with 13 minutes to play.

It was to be UKZN’s first ever point in the Varsity Football Tournament as the match finished at 3-3 despite a few opportunities late on.
