UP-Tuks take the spoils against UKZN

The University of Pretoria registered their first win of the season when they beat the University of KwaZulu-Natal 2-0 in Round Three of Varsity Football action at the Tuks Stadium in Pretoria on Thursday night.

It was a match that both teams needed to win in order to get their campaigns back on track and the men from Pretoria would have breathed a sigh of relief that they were able to take the three points on offer.

It would take half an hour before the scoreboard was effected by play as UP-Tuks’ Chinedu Okolo found the back of the net with a brilliant effort to put them a goal ahead.

UKZN were never out of the proceedings as they attacked with intent but the defending champions were steadfast in defence and took their 1-0 lead into the break.

The Durbanites struggled to contain a rampant UP-Tuks outfit who wanted nothing more than to add to one goal advantage and credit must be given to UKZN’s defence throughout the second half.

UP-Tuks did eventually break through and it was none other than their sharpshooter Richard Moremi who netted a stunner to hand his team a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute.

The Striped Generation opted to tighten their man on man defence and effectively parked the bus as they shut out UKZN in the final minutes of the match to claim a hard fought and well deserved 2-0 win in a cold and windy Pretoria.

Fixture: UWC 0-1 TUT

TUT adds more misery to UWC’s disappointing season

A cold and windy night at the Operation Room was not conducive for carpet football. It was a game that showed glimpses but failed to live up to expectations. Both sides started the game being cautious and as a result few scoring opportunities were created. It took 23 minutes for the crowd to see a goal scoring opportunity, when winger Makhubalo was put through by De Sousa and the winger had only the keeper to beat but his lobbed effort could only hit the post with Ncube well beaten. Both sides went to the break locked at 0-0.

TUT started the second like a house on fire, making the home side play on the back foot and they managed to get a goal through an own goal by Clinton Herwel. The goal seemed to make the game more open as both sides threw all they had at each other. With fifteen minutes left the home side made changes hoping to get that equalising goal but all changes could not help them get that crucial goal.

This is UWC’s third loss in the 2018 edition and TUT’s first win at the Operation Room. This loss means that UWC is sitting rock bottom of the log and that means a lot of work needs to be done by the Bellville side in order to make sure that they secure a spot in the top four. It’s back to the drawing board for Coach Sallie and his side. The game ended 1-0 to the visitors
